HISTORY OF ST. MARTIN’S HOSPITAL AMBALAVAYAL

  1. In early 1970’s our founder Fr. George Kazhikachallil, in the spiritual inspiration from ST. Martin De Porres wanted to started a Health Care Unit at Ambalavayal. Fr. George Kazhikachallil
  2. In 1972, bought a tea shop for a sum of Rs. 3000 from Punchalayil Joseph.
  3. In 1973, Martin Medical Dispensary started functioning as a branch of Assumption Hospital, Sulthan Bathery. At that time it was the one & only health care facility available in and around Ambalavayal.
  4. It was inaugurated and blessed by His Lordship Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, Then Bishop of Mananthavady Diocese.
  5. The initial staff’s of Martin Medical Dispensary were, Sr. Josemanual, Sr. Ancit Vadakumoolla, Sr. Catherine Madapally, Sr. Catherine Chooranolickal, Sr. Rosily Valummel.
  6. Initially the all staff members used to travel from Sulthan Bathery to Ambalavayal on a daily bases. Which was very inconvenient to both staffs and patients, hence it was proposed to started a new Convent at Ambalavayal.
  7. In 1974 a new SABS convent was stated at Ambalavayal. Later Fr. George Kazhikachallil gave 4 acres of land, in addition to the 8.5 acres of land purchased for the Hospital and the Convent.
  8. In 1975, A building was constructed for the hospital. The Martin Medical Dispensary was upgraded to Martin Medical Centre. Both OP and IP started functioning.
  9. In 1983, New building was constructed for the hospital for more departments and bed space.
  10. In 2000, an additional building was constructed for the expansion of the Medical Centre, Which is the present Old Block (Shantal Block).In 1983, New building was constructed for the hospital for more departments and bed space.
  11. In 2014, the old building was demolished and a new State of the Art Hospital building was constructed, which is the present ST. Martin’s Hospital.
